Find Your Paul, Barnabas, and Timothy: The Biblical Blueprint for Growth

by | Jul 31, 2025

Some of the best advice I ever received from a mentor in college ministry: “Marty, find your Paul, your Barnabas, and your Timothy.”

At the time, it sounded simple—maybe even cliché. But over the years, that advice has become a compass for how I approach relationships, mentorship, and growth in both faith and fitness. And I want to share with you today how this ancient wisdom from Scripture can radically reshape your own journey of rebuilding—body, mind, and soul.

The Biblical Origin

Before we dive into how this plays out practically, let’s explore where this trio comes from in the Bible:

  • Paul was a bold apostle and spiritual father to many. Most notably, he mentored Timothy, calling him “my true child in the faith” (1 Timothy 1:2).

  • Barnabas was Paul’s close companion and encourager. His name literally means “son of encouragement” (Acts 4:36), and he walked with Paul—shoulder to shoulder.

  • Timothy was a young leader who looked up to Paul, received guidance from him, and grew into a spiritual leader in his own right.

Together, these three figures represent three essential types of relationships every Christian should seek:
a mentor (Paul), a peer (Barnabas), and a mentee (Timothy).

These roles aren’t rigid. You might be a Timothy in one season and a Paul in another. But having all three in your life brings balance, accountability, humility, and growth.

Let’s break it down.

1. Find Your Paul – The Mentor Who Calls You Higher

Everyone needs someone ahead of them on the journey—someone who has walked the road longer, with more scars, more wisdom, and more spiritual maturity.

Your Paul is your coach, your teacher, your guide.

Paul poured into Timothy with intentionality. He taught him sound doctrine. He corrected him with love. He equipped him for ministry and encouraged him to fan into flame the gifts God had placed in him (2 Timothy 1:6).

In today’s world, this might look like:

  • A spiritual director or pastor who meets with you regularly.

  • A seasoned coach or leader who sees your potential and speaks truth with love.

  • An older friend who has been where you are and is willing to share what they’ve learned the hard way.

Why You Need a Paul:

  • To remind you of your mission when you forget.

  • To challenge your excuses and call out your blind spots.

  • To pray for you and with you, especially in dry seasons.

  • To model obedience and holiness in a tangible, human way.

Fitness Reflection:

In training, your Paul is the one who knows the form better than you do. They won’t let you skip reps or go through the motions. They stretch you—literally and spiritually. We need mentors who care more about our growth than our comfort.

💬 “Who’s pouring into you right now? Who do you allow to speak into your blind spots?”

2. Walk With Your Barnabas – The Friend Who Stays in the Mess

While Paul represents the leader and Timothy the learner, Barnabas represents the friend who walks alongside you—equal in mission, united in purpose.

Barnabas traveled with Paul through thick and thin. He stood by him when others doubted his conversion. He encouraged him when doors closed. He defended John Mark when Paul was ready to give up on him (Acts 15:36–39).

Barnabas was not just a friend—he was a co-laborer in the Gospel.

In your life, Barnabas might be:

  • A prayer partner or small group buddy.

  • A close friend who shares your values and isn’t afraid of your mess.

  • A co-worker who uplifts and challenges you to be faithful in your vocation.

Why You Need a Barnabas:

  • To celebrate victories and grieve losses with you.

  • To tell you the truth when you’re out of line.

  • To remind you who you are when you forget.

  • To lift you up when you’re too tired to keep going alone.

Fitness Reflection:

In workouts, your Barnabas is the friend who shows up early, stretches with you, and doesn’t let you skip leg day. They’re in the trenches, sweating and praying with you through every rep. The people we journey with shape the pace and direction of our walk.

💬 “Who stands beside you—not above or below—but right there with you?”

3. Raise Up Your Timothy – The One Who Learns From You

It’s not enough to be poured into—we are called to pour out.
Paul didn’t just collect knowledge. He invested in Timothy, who would later lead the church in Ephesus.

Your Timothy is the person you’re mentoring.
They may not have your experience, but they have your trust. And they need your patience.

You don’t have to be perfect to mentor someone. You just need to be one step ahead and willing to walk with them.

Why You Need a Timothy:

  • To keep you grounded and remind you of how far you’ve come.

  • To encourage you to articulate your faith and values clearly.

  • To invite humility and service—passing on what God has taught you.

  • To continue the mission, long after you’ve moved on.

Fitness Reflection:

Your Timothy is the newer runner asking how to breathe through a 5K. The friend curious about macros who watches how you meal prep. The client or kid who sees your discipline and asks, “How did you get here?”
Your witness might be their first step.

💬 “Who are you investing in? Who’s watching you live out your faith in real-time?”

The Trinity of Discipleship: Why All Three Matter

Having one of these relationships is powerful. Having all three? Transformational.

  • Paul without Barnabas can become isolated.

  • Barnabas without Paul or Timothy may lack direction.

  • Timothy without Paul risks burnout or confusion.

But together, these roles create a rhythm of receiving, walking with, and giving away.

It mirrors the very life of Christ—He submitted to the Father, walked with the disciples, and empowered them to go out and make more disciples.

How to Identify These People in Your Life

Here are a few prompts to help you discern who God might be placing in these roles in your life:

Finding Your Paul:

  • Who is someone older or wiser in your faith circle?

  • Who speaks with both truth and tenderness?

  • Who do you feel challenged by—but in a way that inspires growth?

Pray and ask God to reveal a spiritual mentor or invite you into a mentoring relationship that stretches you.

Finding Your Barnabas:

  • Who walks beside you without judgment?

  • Who “gets” your calling, your struggles, your joys?

  • Who encourages you with presence, not just advice?

Your Barnabas may already be in your life. Don’t overlook the quiet friend who shows up when others fade.

Finding Your Timothy:

  • Who looks to you for support, even informally?

  • Who reminds you of your younger self?

  • Who needs your encouragement and your time—not your perfection?

Remember: You don’t have to wait until you “have it all together” to mentor. Faithful presence is more powerful than polished answers.

Real-Life Examples

Let me share how this plays out in my own life:

  • My Paul has been my parents, priests, Catholic coaches, and my own personal trainer. They’ve walked through my discernment, stroke recovery, and helped me build Rebuild the Body with integrity.

  • My Barnabas is my accountability partner and workout buddy, my siblings, etc.

  • My Timothys are my daughter, clients, students, and moms who reach out and say, “How do I start over?” or “Can you help me rebuild?” They remind me to keep stewarding the mission God placed in my hands.

None of these relationships are transactional. They are transformational. And when we commit to nurturing these roles, we open ourselves to the full cycle of discipleship.

What to Do If You’re Missing One (or All) of These

Sometimes, we go through seasons where we feel alone. Maybe you’re new to the faith, or you’ve been burned by past relationships. You might be wondering, “Where do I even start?”

1. Start with Prayer

Ask God to show you your Paul, Barnabas, and Timothy.
He delights in giving good gifts—including people.

2. Look Around

Sometimes the person God is sending is already near—you just haven’t seen them through the right lens yet.

3. Be Willing to Take the First Step

Invite someone to coffee. Offer to pray for a friend. Reach out to someone who inspires you and ask for a chat.

Discipleship isn’t about hierarchy—it’s about holy friendship.

When These Relationships Get Messy

Let’s be real—these relationships won’t always be smooth. Paul and Barnabas had disagreements (Acts 15). Mentors fail. Friends let us down. Mentees may walk away.

But that doesn’t mean the blueprint is broken. It means we’re human.

Be patient. Keep showing up. Extend grace.

Because the Church was never meant to be a solo sport. It’s a Body.

And we were made to grow together.

A Final Word: Your Circle Shapes Your Strength

Just like your muscles grow under resistance and repetition, your soul grows through relationships that stretch, support, and strengthen you.

If you want to grow in faith…
If you want to build something that lasts…
If you want to rebuild the broken parts of your body and soul…

Don’t try to do it alone.

Find your Paul. Walk with your Barnabas. Invest in your Timothy.

And remember: Jesus did.

He submitted to the Father (Paul).
He called His disciples friends (Barnabas).
And He sent them out to lead others (Timothy).

You are part of that legacy.
